Blackjack

Blackjack Basics

BlackJack is played with the standard 52 cards, though in it's varied form more than one pack of cards may also be used. In a one pack game, the cards are usually dealt face down, where as in a multi-pack game the cards are dealt face up. Cards are counted at their face value. In any game of Blackjack, Kings, Queens, and Jacks count as ten. Aces count as one or eleven. If the first two cards a player is dealt totals twenty-one, the player has a blackjack and wins. Blackjack pays one and a half times the players bet. If the dealer also has a blackjack then there is a tie.

The dealer deals two cards to each of the player and to himself also; the main objective of the game is to have a card total of twenty-one. This game is played against the dealer where in the players try to beat the dealer. If the card total of a player exceeds that of the dealer without going over 21, he is the winner. If the card total exceeds twenty-one the player loses his bet, i.e. he busts. If the dealer busts and the players card total is not over 21 ,the player wins. If there is a tie between the dealer and the player, the hand is called a push, and no money is won or lost.

There are three choices in the game when the betting gets to a particular player.

Hitting and Standing: If a player is satisfied with his first two card total, he may stand by waving a flat hand over his cards. If the player wishes to take another card he may "take a hit" by pointing at his cards with his finger. A player may hit or stand as he wishes, however the dealer must hit or stand according to strict rules. The dealer must stand if the dealers total is seventeen or more. The dealer must take a hit if the total is less than seventeen.

Doubling Down: In certain situations, it is advantageous to double down. The player places a number of chips equal to the amount he has already bet next to his existing bet. The dealer then deals the player more than one card . This may only be done on the player's first two cards. The idea is to double the bet if the player feels the situation is to his advantage.

Splitting Pairs: If the first two cards are a pair the player can decide to split his cards. The player places a bet equal to the original bet, and the dealer gives the card to the first card. The player then decides whether he wants to hit, stand, double or split again depending on his cards and the house rules. When the first hand has been completed, the dealer will then deal a card to the other card that was split and the player can then move on with action on his hand. The player is in fact playing two hands. In cases when Aces are split, the dealer will deal one card to each Ace and no more.

Blackjack Tips And Strategy Guide

It is perfectly fine for you to take your blackjack strategy card with you into a casino. As long as it doesn't slow up the game when you refer to it, it's highly unlikely that any of the casino's pit bosses or the dealer will ask you to stop using it. If you're playing online, it's even better because you can refer to your strategy card on your own time and play the game at whatever leisurely speed you so choose.

To make life that much easier for you, we've put together a blackjack strategy card that you can print and take with you to the land casinos, or bookmark to use while you play at an online casino.
